1977 85 Hp Evinrude shift problem

Hi There guys,<br />I took my boat out today, after doing the water pump. That worked ok, but when I tried to put the boat into reverse: Nothing.<br /><br />the forward shift worked ok, but the reverse would not. I could adjust it so the reverse woulr work by spinning the adjuster on the cable at the motor. I, for some reason, was able to spin the adjuster set-up right out of the cable end (The brass thing--a trunion?. Is my cabe shot; i mean, is the cable supposed to unscrew from the brass thing at the end. Please help; I really need reverse. Is the cable screwed?<br />Please help<br />Brad

when replacing your waterpump did you turn the adjusting screw on the end of the shift shaft? by moving it you could have changed whre the shift points are in relation to the control box position. i adjusted mine with the motor out of the watere and with the motor off shifted the motor in reverse and checked that the prop. was engaged. then do the same for forward. if you have to adjust the thumb screw on the end of the cable too far for either gear then move the shift rod end up or down the to help. hope this helps out
