It is a Johnson Powershift II

I'm not positive it is a 1971

AS far as the serial numbers, I wasn't sure where to look. I found 2 numbers on the engine.

382776 and 313418

If that is not it, please tell me where to look.

Thanks for the help

Hi Mike,

I just found the model and serial #.

Model # 60ESL-71C

S/N J3492185

Does that help with the points? I got an e-mail from a website that sais they had them for $80.00. That seems very high

Thanks, Rooty

Re: Points for a 1971 Johnson Outboard 65 hp

Hi Rooty, there should be a small metal plate on the transom mount, if its a 65hp the model# would start with the # 65 followed by a series of letters & probably ending with 2 numbers, for instance if it said 65ESL72 would indicate 65hp elec. start longshaft made in 1972. If its not there try to find an aluminum freeze plug on the top of your motor, the # should be stamped there as well.

According to the model guides they didn't make a 65hp motor in 71.

It kind of makes a difference when trying to locate parts if you know what I mean.

Mike ;)

Re: Points for a 1971 Johnson Outboard 65 hp

HI Mike,

Thanks for your help. That site indicated the points are not available. They are omc pn 383655. I think I may have found them @ go2marine.com and a place called laingsoutboards.com. The reason for changing the points is I would run the boat all day, start it ten times a day and then at the last start of the day it would crank but it would not turn over. The first 5 times it happened in my driveway when I was going to flush the engine with fresh water. The last two times I was in the middle of the Bay. Two consecutive tows. I have insurance but it is very frustrating. My mechanic suggested changing the points and the line to the amplifier. What do you think?

Does this engine have a condenser?

By the way, my mechanic said it is a 1971 60 hp Evinrude.

Thanks again for all your responses.

Rooty

Hi Rooty,

I'm not seeing anything on that diagram or parts list calling for a condenser, alota parts under that cap though.

The reason I asked about the points was it took awhile to locate that diag/list so I wasn't sure your motor had that ign. system.

Good luck,
Mike :)

Rooty,

FYI, many of the ignition components on your motor were also used on the 85hp,

I don't know if you plan on buying used or new parts for the motor, I found several on ebay, both new & used.

If you replace the amp. I think they recommend replacing the coils also, not sure though.

Mike :)

The points on that engine are nothing but a very low voltage switch and will outlast your present and next engine. That is unless you've somehow thrown a full 12v to them somehow at some time.

It sounds like you have an intermitent pulsepack which can be tested as follows.

(Battery Capacitance Dischage Powerpack Test)
Various OMC Engines - 1968 to 1972)
(J. Reeves)

Purchase a small 12v bulb at your local automotive parts store (the 12v bulb is to look like a flashlight bulb, not a headlight bulb). Solder two wires to that bulb, one to the side of the bulb (ground), and the other to the positive point. You might use a bulb of a somewhat lower voltage to obtain a brighter glow... just a suggestion.

Remove the spark plugs. With the key in the on position, make sure that you have 12v going to the pack at the terminal block (purple wire). Now, connect the ground wire from the bulb to any powerhead ground. Connect the wire from the positive point of that bulb to the powerpack wire that is connected to the coil wire on the terminal board (blue wire).

Crank the engine and observe that bulb closely (CLOSELY!). If that bulb glows even the slightest bit, the powerpack is okay. It may be a very dim glow... just so it glows! If it doesn't glow, the pack has failed.

Keep in mind, that type powerpack (Battery Capacitance Discharge) demands a top notch battery of at least 70 amp hours. Any less will, in time, cause powerpack failure.
