Hello again all. Im so proud of myself... about 2 weeks ago I bought a 1958 16 ft aluminum shallow V boat with a 1963 Evinrude 40HP on it for $500 including trailer. The guy i bought it from said he hadnt had it running in about a year and made him start it for me before i bought it. Motor started up after some cohersion with some ether. Now I have taking this boat out several times even braving the strong current of the Missouri River. The thing runs brillantly. Although sometimes at WOT it starts to sputter almostr like not getting gas. I just lower the throttle a bit let the engine get sounding good again and open it up and it flys again. There seems to be no common link as to when the engine does this. There have been a couple of days being out on the water when it didnt do it what so ever. Any Ideas? Also with this motor the shifter cable broke at the engine. I havent yet (always have someone with me to shift me manually at the engine) but how much would it hurt this engine to start it while it is forward gear?

Any carbureted engine is always prone to crap in the carbs. A good cleaning and blow job will usually take care of this. Keep in mind while at WOT that carb is sucking as hard as it can for maximum fuel. Especially where this has been sitting, a good fuel system cleaning and possible rebuilt kit would not hurt. I would start there.

Dotn forget to obtain a repair manual for your boat motor. always nice to have one handy if you plan on working on your boat. Im sure the fell's would agree.

Dirt, To start that motor in gear, you will have to defeat some of its safety mechanisms. Not too hard to do BTW. However when we started them we usually set the throttle near 1/2 open. If you do this while in gear, it will be an unsafe jolt!

okay besides the unsafe jolt (even while in neutral i have realized that i can start this engine near no throttle at all) will it cause any damage at all to the lower unit or engine?

As long as that engine is in gear, starting speed is of no importance to the gearcase, but would be a real safety hazard, I am trying to think how that engine locked out the starter when in gear, or too much throttle advance. As I recall, they were using the neautral safety switch on the gear shift linkage.

A sixty three is a 1:50 for fuel already. As for starting in gear. Once the engine is warm, you can start in gear at a real low rpm already(600/700)and there will be no jolting. It is a real good idea to take of that problem, because sooner or later, somebody will stand in that boat while you accidently start at 1500 rpm and that can be very unpleasant. With these old engines you often see that the fuel hoses are a bit brittle and may suck air.Or the membrane in the pump has lost its form and should be replaced and then of course there is the fuel filter that may be half full of dirt.<br />Good luck and enjoy
