Hello, I have removed the motor from my pontoon and brought home to my garage for a waterpump tune up and carb cleaning. My question is when removing the motor I unplugged the motor from the remote ignition. The wires ran from the front of the pontoon to the plug under the motor cover. Is there a way to start the motor with the starter using a jumper? I have the battery.
I do not have a wiring diagram to know what pins to jumper. In addition what kind of water muff will I need to run my motor? I hope this is not to confusing. Please advise before I do something stupid. Thank in advance.

Tim

Welcome anvilhead, You should be able to jump it at the starter solenoid, jump it between the + terminal from bat. on the solenoid to the smaller terminal. it should be a white wire I beleive, its the neutral start cutout wire

Good Luck :)

I have a 1989 Johnson 28 SPL. The water intake is under the cav. plate and I don't think you can use muffs. Standard muffs(look like earmuffs) will not work because the intake is not on the side. They might have a product that will work but I have never seen one. I have always used a garbage can full of water to run mine in the driveway, but that might be messy in the garage. Try to acquire a steel drum they work well and you can clamp the outboard to it.

I will research the muff issue to see if one is available for my motor. If not I will be looking for a steel drum. Thanks for the info Take care, Tim

Once you get the engine started, there is no way to stop it unless you choke it, disconnect the fuel line and let it run out of gas, or pull the plug wires.

Upinsmoke I am glad you relayed that info. I will know how to stop my motor now. I do not have experience points built up in the outboard department yet. Hopefully this will be a rewarding experience. Thanks again for all that replied. Tim

There is a little red lever below the carb. You can turn that and it will stop faster, but make sure you turn it back where it belongs so you won't wonder which way it goes next time. Bill

I have a 88 evinrude 28hp SPL and my problem is down in the lower unit area about 8" up is a tiny hole that oil is coming out of. Not out of the prop but up aways and on the end of facing the boat. Looks to be like a screw hole. What is this hole for?

Sailor - This topic is ten years old. Your post is also way off topic. It is better to start a new topic with your question. Take a look at the Help Tip on top of the page for guidance.
