Wide open throttle, the timing refers to when the throttle hits the full spark advance stop screw.<br /><br />To verify this you'll need to have your mechanic hook it up to a dyno, or you could get a test wheel a timing light and a BIG test tank. Or you could go with out the tank & test wheel and hang your 6 out on the back of your boat with the timing light and have someone you trust run the boat to its stops

Just a thought, but why don't you ask your mechanic if for $1400.00 he actully verified it was overheating before he started replacing parts.

He shot it with his IR gun and said that it was running 180+ when it would buzz high temp.

D, I just re-read your first post: the first time you took it in it had no stats and it was overheating, right?<br /><br />Now, after $1400.00, it again has no stats and it runs fine?

Couple of ??, is this motor run in salt or fresh water?<br /><br />Did the mechanic clean/flush out all the water passages? for that money I would think/hope so.<br /><br />Now for the big one. I notice after looking at the diagram/parts list for your gearcase that there is a high altidude gear set available. I'm wondering if your motor has it, how you would find out and what effect it would have at sea level?

Mike:<br /><br />1. I just relook at all of my tickets from the mechanic. T-stats were in it the whole and one was stuck open. For some reason, I thought they had been taken out by the previous owner.<br />2. Boat only runs in salt water. I flush the engine every day I run it.<br />3. The boat was made in TX and it is the orig motor. I would assume that they would not order a high altitude model. I also know both of the previous two owners. They said they experienced the occasional overheat, but nothing like I am now going through.

MCM<br />$49 thru MSCDirect.com on special. I'm sure many places have guns for similar price. I have seen many higher priced (up to $250), but my cheapo is accurate to within +/- 2°F.

I'd double check the impellor myself, in fact check the entire water pump unit for wear. At high RPMs you thermostats should be bypassed by them pushing out on the spring. Might be a good idea to give the motor a good flushing over several days in a barrel with vinegar, CRL, or SaltAway. I'm betting you have salt/corrosion/gunk buildup in the waterpassages in the block.
