batteries,vol.regulator,or alternator ????

last out i had to jump the batteries, {5 years old] all day the vol meter went up and down, fish finder would lose power. sometimes i would jump to start other times it started fine. voltage has me confused, do you think new batteries will solve my problems {i know i need them] thanks :confused:

Welcome flatseas, <br /><br />It would really help to know what kind of motor this is. how about posting a model# ;)

Its very rare to get 5 years use out of a marine battery. Shorted cell(s) could be causing your problems. You can verify this by having then load tested.

I forgot to add that once you are sure you have good batteries, you can test your charging circuit.

sorry i completely forgot at the time, the motor is a johnson 150 ocean pro year 2000 thanks for the reply

If there are wing nuts on those batteries, replace them with brass, or stainless steel nuts, and lock washers. Are the battery connections tight at this point. Loose connections anywhere are murder on a charging system.

What readings were you observing on the voltmeter. Anything between 13 and 14.5 or so indicates the system is charging. Whether that voltage is reaching the battery is another story. Check and clean connections as suggested. Have your batteries load tested. In fact, at five years just replace them.
