I need some help with an 85 HP Johnson

hey there, <br />My family has owned a decent size saltwater boat for many years now and in the past 15-20 years or so it hasn't seen use. I have always wanted to get it up and running and now i am ready. My problem is one of its twin 85 HP Johnson outboards will not pump water throught the engine causing it to overheat. I have recently replaced the water pump and still nothing. Any suggestions?

Welcome!!<br /><br />The water pump and thermostats are only part of the complete system. You should replace the deflectors also. There are 2 on each side in the water passages in the block. As they get old they can swell and actually restrict water flow rather than divert it. Once you pop the heads off youll see them. Since its overheated youll need to replace the head gaskets anyway.<br /><br />When you say you repalced the water pump we assume you repalced the entire kit, not just the impeller. If you only replaced the impeller, go ahead and change the rest of the pump.

The repairs that Dale suggested are pretty easy if you ever turned a wrench before. Shop labor runs anywhere from $60/hr and up. A good OEM manual will run you a great deal less than that and lead you step by step. Don't get cheap and get a Seloc or Clymer. The factory manual has the shortcuts, tips, and great pictures. You will be able to do it for the price of parts which probably are a little more than you think they are. Call your local dealer with your model number and price them. You may be able to pick up the manual on ebay. Try it yourself first. If it isn't right you can always take it to the dealer. The savings and satisfaction are well worth the time.

thanks alot for the suggestions, ive been looking at parts and pricing them but i have not been able to locate any "deflectors" is this something i shouldwait to do until ive replaced the rest of the system
