1987 Evinrude 15hp runs poorly

When I put my boat in the water it runs poorly, speeding up but then slowing down in a regular cycle. When I run it at home it seems to work fine. I have Seafoamed the carb and added it to the gas. Still no joy. I did notice that if I pull the choke out just a bit it will run good. Any ideas?

Sounds like a carb or fuel pump problem, Androitt. A partly clogged high speed jet will do exactly what you describe, as will a failing fuel pump.

I would start by dismantling and cleaning the carb with special attention to the smallest passages.

If you don't have a Service Manual, you need one.

Good luck, and welcome to iboats. :)

Yep, what JB said. The give-a-way is pulling the choke out to force more fuel into the carb throat. Also be aware that there was two different carbs for that year. One, early production, has a rounded top. The late production model has a flat "plastic" top on it. You will need to know this when you get a carb kit.

Let us know if you have any other questions....and do get a service manual as JB suggested.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I kind of figured it was the carb and the high speed jets since there are no adjustments for them. Can you tell me where I might be able to get a rebuild kit for the carb in case I feel brave enough to do it myself? Haven't rebuilt one since my 59 Chevy.

Oh yes, I do have the manual for the moter but it's not really that informative, just covers the basics for maint and upkeep.

That sounds like an owner's manual. The shop manual will give the gorry details needed to complete 99% of all jobs. The OMC manuals can be a bit technical for some, so I liked having the factory manual as well as the Seloc when I was begining to work on outboards. The two make for an awesome combo.

Yes, thanks you are right, just an owners manual, so I have ordered a couple of repair manuals. One by SELOC and another by CLYMER. I still need to find a source for a carb rebuild kit and also a fuel pump if I need one.

As for the kits, Iboats carries the Sierra brand, for an OEM you can check iShopMarine.com, maxrules.com, probably several other places including your local OMC dealer.
