1973 evinrude 50 hp just stops no warning

model #503731 serial# E001281. runs great for about 20 minutes then just shuts off. engine does not seem hot as i can still put my hand on it. will restart run 5 mins. shuts off. won't restart, if you keep trying the starter gets hot and cuts out until it cools. after starter cools (10-15 mins) it will restart and we go thru it all again. i've had it to a "mechanic" who isjust giving excuses now (need new mech), bad vent, bad gasline, water in gas, all the old stuff. new tanks, new hoses, new gas, carb rebuilt, new coils. suggestions

Have you tested for spark when it cut off. That's the first step in daignosing your problem. Does it have spark or not.

Bob,<br /><br />Walker is right. The first thing to check for is spark. Try it cold before it gives you the problem then try it after it quits. With the plugs removed spark should jump 7/16" and be strong, blue and snappy, a weak yellow spark or no spark indicates an ign. problem. Post back with results of both tests.

What kind of vent do you have on that new gas tank?

i haven't use this boat in about 2months since i've gotten my 55 Lone Star Commander w 55 15hp evinrude restored. i'm using the new plastic cans with the vent you unscrew in the cap. will try to get 55 in water in near future.

have you checked the fuelpump .usealey a coil or powerp[ack will onley break down on one cylinder, if it is firing and want cvrank it probabley gass. pump bulb and see if it will keep on running . <br /> when it quits check and see if it has lost fire first

ive pump bulb as it starts to quit, no go. has to be electrical the more info i get. thanks bob
