Where do real mechanics buy OMC/BRP tools?

I would like a source to buy a couple of REAL tools for working on my motor. Where can I order them? I'd like to get a flywheel puller/holder and a piston stop tool. I can't find any tools on the BRP site.<br /><br />Thanks

You can make a piston stop out of an old spark plug you kmow. Knock all the porcelein out of the shell, braze a 1/4-20 nut to the top of the shell, screw in a 1/4-20 bolt of appropriate lenghth with a wing nut for a stopper. You can round off the end of the bolt to prevent nicking the top of the piston.

i use a rope for a pistion stop its an old trick tought to be by my father. just feed the rope in to the spark plug hole .i have a 2 foot peice of rope i use and feed about 10-12 inches into the cylinder. i like this because it causes no damage to the pistions. i have seen some piston stops make dimples in the tops of the piston causeing a hot spot when carbon gets built up in it. this idea also works great for stick heads when u cant brake them free to change a head gasket. just install the rope into the cylinder and turn the flywheel the pressure will pop the head right off. works great on car heads also.

Please don't get the wrong idea guys as I appreciate your help. I just want the right tools for the motor. I'm the guy who turned a pressure washer into a generator with a car alternator so I'm not above "rigging" things up. I'm not real impressed with using a harmonic balancer puller on the flywheel. I don't like the "jam a piece of wood in the starter " trick, and have heard (I think it was Joe Reeves) that the rope trick can damage the bearings in an OB. I've taken a real intrest in OB repair so buying the right tools will be worth it to me.

Wayne: That's a good trick, until the piston shears the rope off that went through one of the ports. Don't try this at home.

the holder/puller tool is a very expensive harmonic balancer puller. I use the snap on flywheel holding/turning tool and a craftsman harmonic balancer puller and have for years and years. the snap on tool is about 70 dollars and sears has one for about half that.<br /> the craftsman puller kit is about 20 dollars . depending on the engine you will need 3 grade 5 or better 1/4x 20 by about 3" bolts or 3 5/16 x24 grade 5 or better by about 3" bolts. some heavy duty or double thick washers desined for pullers and a tapping mallet. on the smaller engines without teeth on the flywheel I use a strap wrench to hold them. the rope trick can be bad on a two stroke if your not careful. I have seen it damage things if it gets hung in the ports and compresses a ring land. there again we have no clue what size this motor is and therefore no clue how tight things are.

only real mechanics make tools haha. good luck in your search for the very expencive outboard tools.if u have taken a liking to outboard repairs u know that there are many tools for many makes and models of outboards u will have quite a collection of tools and lots of money spent . i use a harmonic balancer puller and have seen high $$$ florida marine shops use them also. i guess i should have said that the rop trick was for losing flywheel nuts sorry. also i would hope u dont stuff it in there at the bottom of the stroke. i guess thats where it takes alittle know how about the internal workings of and outboard.

Alden.... The special tools you speak of can be purchased through your local Evinrude/Johnson dealership or from retired marine personel such as myself. Unfortunately I have none of the tools left as I listed them on eBay and various shops grabbed them up.<br /><br />However, the flywheel puller mentioned..... the harmonic puller puller is basically the same as the OMC tool, it's simply shaped differently, but it does the job.<br /><br />Now, and I can't resist this. We now know where the real mechanics buy their tools..... Where do the fake mechanics go to buy theirs? (grin)

I made my flywheel puller, with two sets of holes to suit both the bigger and smaller hp outboards. It hasn't failed me yet.<br /><br />As for a piston stop tool, I have always used a piece of black nylon dowel. It's about 12" long and 1/2" dia. It's just soft enough to prevent damaging any internal sufaces, but still strong enough to stop the piston.

so you stop the piston, on a 225 V the torque on the nut is rather high. the rollers on the rod and wristpins are not designed for being used as a stop. that and the correct tools are just to cheap and handy, try the rope trick when changing a shaft coupler and you will see why.<br /> thats why tools are like sex, cant have enough,and while ya may not always want one they are handy when ya need one.

Boy am I almost sorry I went along with this.It was so easy.The rope in the cylinder is an old trick on low power motors,such as lawn mowers.<br /><br />It has very little marine use.<br /><br />Piston stop tool is where I got caught.This tool is only used for timing useage.It cannot hold a piston while you unbolt the flywheel.<br /><br />OOPS DHP
