Re: mid-60s 40 HP Evinrude

Have a look at the Oil Mix FAQ in the FAQ forum for details on the oil mix. Yours is "Fully Jeweled". Joe Reeves remembers a memo from OMC allowing 50:1 in certain pre '64 models, including the 40hp. So there's lots of choice in the matter. It's a debated subject, so decide for yourself.

Lark's right, there's nothing magical in the box. If it's got a generator (attached to the flywheel by a toothed belt) then it's regulator was in the boat too. Just some junk you'll need so it would be good to get it.

That elctric shift engine has a generator, if the electric junction box is missing, so is the voltage regulator. Does it have the control box with all the related wiring harness? That is a roller bearing engine, the correct oil mix is 50-1.

One of my project motors is your motor's Johnson equivalent. I've been bookmarking strings from this forum for a while now. Here's a handfull of informative and well-written ones out of my "Bigtwin" folder. Happy reading; great stuff from some really knowledgable and generous people!

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033529
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033437
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=28&t=033982#000026
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=034543
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=037229
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=028391#000000
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=015387#000002

EDIT:
Whoops, sorry Robby6950, I just reread your 2nd post and realize that you've been "wrenching for 45 years". You've probably seen all this before many times. Good reading though and maybe someone else following Bigtwin posts will learn something useful.

"great stuff from some really knowledgeable and generous people!' ....Amen on that one. And even though I have wrenched awhile (Machinist as trade), there is ALWAYS more to learn. This is the first 63 Rude, so its all new to me.
Anyway, pulled the lower plug, and what looks like wet cement, pudding consistency, barely dribbled out. Didn't expect much better, as neither plug had the O-Ring. Amazing what some shade tree guys think is OK I guess. But has super compression, lots of good parts, prop not chewed or bent (will get my $20 back on the prop alone, so out zero money). It will get put over in the corner for now. Have 4 other boats to float that run, so its not like I'm losing out here. I emailed the guy to keep looking for the rest of the stuff, so we will see what happens. Thanks for the help guys. And now I will hit those links itstippy...thanks all! Robby

Oh yeah, toothed belt run Gen, control/shift box with no innards, wiring loom comes out the motor, and goes to obviously that box with the stuff. I'll work on getting it. Old guy I got it from lives on the other peninsula by me, and rides motorcycles too, so if its found, I'm sure he will get back to me. But there's a better chance it will get stripped for parts down the line, of course after I run it by the local boat mechanics who might know of someone needing it the way it is. It will never see a junk yard as long as I own it. Damn, I hate to even leave it sit outside! Thanks again......
