I have just replaced the plugs(Champion) on my 115 Evinrude and noticed that they advise for plugs with gaskets(I assume that's the washer) you tighten a half turn. I can only get them about a quarter of turn before they very tight and would be nervous about taking them any further. Are the Champion instructions correct?

Hey Stripey, I have a 2004 50hp Johnson which also takes champions with the washers. The engine owners manual says to torque to 18 - 21 ft lbs, just as walleyehed posted above. I would torque it to those specs and not worry about the half turn.

Jay

1/2 turn works fine for new plugs. After initial installation the gasket is crushed. Removal of the plug and re-insertion will result possible stripping of the threads in the head if you then attempt to turn the plug 1/2 turn. Torque them as indicated above.

A torgue wrench reading in in./lbs is best on these aluminum engines.
