Hi,

Went to collect a brand new boat with an evinrude etec 90 as ordered but was dismayed to see a blue motor on the boat! The salesperson insisted there is no longer a saltwater/freshwater distinction and that the white and blue motors are identical.

Model is E90DPL SDA Serial 05132830 dated 10/2005

I have put taking delivery on hold now and am seeking independent opinion. The etc website shows a clear distinction between slatwater and fresh (including model numbers)

Can anyonw enlighten me here? The fear is corrosion from saltwater but I am currently in an inland area but will be taking it down to the beach this xmas. I am worried they are palming stock off on me, me being very ignorant on tech matters!

Thanks

Back when I kept track of just about everything pertaining to the OMC engines (Retired some time ago), all of their engines were (to keep it simple) treated for salt water, pertaining to all of the aluminum castings etc involved.

On some models (back then), the color might vary due to some accessory etc one model did or didn't have.

The above posts suggest to me that Bombardier is now manufacturing two different engines of every horsepower..... one for fresh water, and one for salt water?

I'd be interested in knowing more about this subject/topic.

Just checked the Etec website and they are definitely showing both saltwater and freshwater models. Saltwater model has many stainless parts along with special paint/corrosion treatments that the freshwater model says nothing about.

Sounds like your dealer is sadly misinformed or not very forthright.

Gary

I suspect the boatbuilder, part of package, installed the wrong engine.

All the controls, etc., are the same, but the engines may NOT be.

Call, BRP and be armed with the engine model and serial numbers.

DO NOT take delivery until you get this straightened out.

The main differences between a blue motor and a white one are paint, decals and the steering arm. The salt water edition has the model designation E90DSLSDA or E90DPXSDA, while the blue models are E90DPLSDA.

Follow this link to the Evinrude website & review the parts catalog to look for differences, I assure you, the steering arm is the main difference, as it is supposed to be a higher grade of stainless steel.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Introduction.htm

Click on "Engine Diagrams" to find the parts catalogs.

I recommend reviewing your sales contract too, the saltwater edition is priced higher than the blue motor. If you paid for a white one, that's what you should be getting. Your sales guy is incorrect about there no longer being a salt water edition.

The model number you posted is that of a 2006 model (SD), it doesn't appear they're palm "old" stock off on you, but again, if white is what you wanted...

Hope this helps,

-John

I remember reading somewhere that the only reason saltwater editions were white is so you don't notice the salt crystals. white on white
And that the engines were identical in the way they were made as far as treatment for corrosion.
