Newbie with question. I was out on the water for a couple hours and engine ran fine until we slowed down for docking. Just as we arrived to the ramp the engine stalled. Since we were at the ramp I didnt care much. I proceded home to flush the motor and noticed it didnt want to run unless the rpms were high.

I lifted the motor cover and noticed water was leaking from a couple places around the head gasket. The head paint changed from light brown to brown.

The coils and everything else plastic attached to the head was melted. The damage only seemed to be on the port side of the engine or 2 of 4 cylinders.

I replaced the starboard side head gasket about 40 hrs ago. The boat has 400hrs w/original motor. I was leaning toward a engine rebuild kit. What do you think???Pls. help

Melted parts means an overheat. Either you had a clog because your intakes were covered, OR your water pump is gone.

I any case, replace your water pump.

A good way to check for water ingestion, into the cylinders, is to look at the spark plugs. If they are clean, you've ingested water.

Time to pull the head and have a look see. Post some pictures if anything looks unusual.

Damage to port side only suggests thermostat problems, rather than water pump.
What is the year/HP of your motor? Model number?

83 jonhson v4 115hp. I know what it looks like inside the head. The water passages are crystalized along the walls. It definately needs to be cleaned. The short rubber hoses need to be replaced also.

From what I understand my motor doesnt have alot of hrs for an outboard. What should I do at this point? besides change the obvious.

Clean the passages as best you can, replace the deflectors, water pump, and thermostats - check the head for warp, new head gasket - button it up and GO. After you run it a few times check the torque on the head bolts and at this point I'd do a compression check.
