Is this just washing out the exhaust hsg? or a leak

My L/U is clear and clean, so I'm thinking this is just mucky from running in a pail...(o/b newbie) My manual does not say what this hole is. tks.<br />1975 Evinrude 20 HP<br />

hystat,<br /><br />That hole is an exhaust tower drain. You are REALLY gunked up in there.<br /><br />It's not unusual, mine was the same way.<br /><br />Might I suggest you either remove the lower unit and clean it up or run some Sea Foam through it. It's NOT necessary though. If you remove the L/U you can change the water pump, while you're at it.

drains the gear housing of water.looks like unburnt oil from the old girl.it help to check these drains from time to time with a small piece of mechanics wire.

In some circumstance....you can help the condition by making sure the fuel mix is correct (50:1), the ignition system is in good working order (ie...good hot spark, correct spark plugs) and the engine is running at the correct temp.

I had just seafoamed the engine.

Well....that would answer the black mess..... You've dislodged a lot of carbon and oil laying about the engine. After the first good run, it should clear up.
