Hello all,

I'm trying to remove the gearbox from this engine to investigate an oil leak. How do I disconnect the gear shift shaft, it seems to be holding the gearbox on.

thanks

Hi Craig,
There is nothing to disconnect. If it won't come loose - it's stuck. Not uncommon on motors used in saltwater with infrequent maintenance. The unit is held on with three bolts - one front, two recessed above the prop. That's it.
Gentle persuasion, penetrating oil, brute force and colorful language are often required at this point. Quite often what will happen is the unit will pull off with the shaft(s) still stuck in the motor. This at least gives you something more positive to grab onto as you pull them out. If you need to grab the shaft itself with ViceGrips or the like, do it in a non-bearing or seal area so you don't marf up important contact areas.
If the search function is working now, then you should be able to search on stuck driveshafts or shift shafts and see what comes up for other solutions.
Good luck!
- Scott

Great, thanks a lot. The model number is E8RCNR.

So far, everything else I've pulled apart is in great condition, with no corrosion and plenty of grease still in place, so hopefully this will be the case with the shafts. I just wan't game to apply any force.

craig

Hello all, I'm still bashing away, managed to move it about 5mm, but can't get it any further. Tried looking up stuck driveshafts, but no help there either. Has anyone got any other suggestions??

If you have enough separation to see the drive shaft and get the nozzle of a spray can in, turn the engine upside down. Spray some PB Blaster or equivalent on the drive shaft. Really soak it. What you want to get is the oil to run down the inverted drive shaft to where it fits into the bottom of the splined crankshaft. Let it sit for a day or two and reapply occasionally.

This is not guaranteed to work but it often does.
