I have a 1988 Johnson 110 hp v-4. I am attempting to change the water pump and reading my Seloc manual have followed all of the instructions including removal of the shift rod clip. The lower unit will only drop 2 inches because the shift rod will not release from the upper unit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same engine, under the carburator you will see a screw, it looks like a bolt but also has a slot, i think it is a 7/16, back the screw out, you may need needle nose pliers too, this screw should come all the way out, also make sure you take all tje bolts off lower unit, there is a bolt under the trim tab that is hidden,

Thanks for the quick reply. I got the hidden bolt but had no idea the screw was there under the carb.

On the 1988 110's, there is a keeper pin in the shift lever rod that needs to be removed to release the shift shaft. Look on the starboard side of the pan where the control cables come in. Remove the keeper pin and push the shift lever rod to port. This will release the shift shaft. Disconnecting the control cable will help.

Thanks OBJ. I did exactly that last night with no luck. I will try to disconnect the control cable tonight. The engine was in reverse as well.

The rod will try to twist as you push from the shift linkage side. You may have to push the shift lever until the bend is almost to the spot where you removed the hitch pin or circlip.Only pull the cable linkage off if you have to.
Shine a lite from the starter side to reveal the shift rod linkage.I like to do this in Forward as it will be easier to see the flathead screw that may not be loose enough to allow the rod end to drop.
Lots of grease or lubriplate on the bolts upon re-assembly! Goodluck!
Tim M

Yep! What Tim said...... :) I like to use gasket sealing compound on the bolts for the lower unit. Gives them a nice protective coating as well as helps the bolts stay put.

No Rudy....the stuff you put on gaskets to help them seal. The stuff I use I get from BRP but similar compounds can be gotten through auto parts stores. Brownish stuff with a brush in the cap. And I'm not talking about Forma-Gasket either..... :)

Thanks guys. I took your advice and the shift rod fell right out. I think the key was having a second set of hands. Anyway I got the lower end seals done and the water pump. Great forum.

Thanks for posting back Dennis. Good to hear things are working out. Don't forget to check the shift rod height before installing the lower unit. With the gear case in neutral, measure from the gear case housing mating surface to the centre line of the hole at the end of the shift rod. Should measure 21 15/16" +/-1/32. The bend at the end of the shift rod faces forward.
