Hello.. Im looking to install a water pump kit in my 1971 18 horse evinrude. I have yaken out the 4 lowest bolts..Seen here
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e224/drkilldrmz/Picture024.jpg
and need to knoe if this bolt here
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e224/drkilldrmz/Picture023.jpg
needs to come out also.. Seems very stuck, and i dont want to break it off..
Also.. If anyone could provide a water pump kit part# that would be great.. Napa shows only the 20 horse, and im pretty sure they would be the same.. I do have a manual on order by the way, just waiting for pay pal to go thru.. Thanks

Yep, needs to come out. Sometimes that bolt becomes corruded its full length and is a bugger to get out. Use heat liberally

Woody, I would say yes, That bolt connects through the long shaft extension housing into the gearcase.

See diagram web page

The OEM p/n for the kit is 0382468, thE aftermarket Sierra/NAPA p/n is 18-3377

Try a liberal amount of PB-Blaster and give it some time to work, that stuff is awesome. I'm currently dissassembling an 80 year old salt water motor and have yet to break or damage a bolt, screw or nut :D

It has been soaking in Pb blaster for around an hour now..Im just worried it may be corroded the lenth of the bolt inside...Also.. im working in the cold, so i guess i should heat the entire area for awhile so nothing is brittle...Thanks MCM.. i may let it soak for a few hours, and give it to her..

i wouldnt be woried at all.
if it breaks the lower unit will stil drop.
i would cut off the head of the bold to make shure you dont break it in the treaths.
the bolt is only treathed the last 1 1/2".

so use heat at the treathed part if that doesnt work at all cut off the head.

good luck

An hour is good, but I had to let some things sit for up to three days and several squirts before they'ld finaly break loose, lots of patience ;) Although, you can still get replacement parts so if it breaks its not going to be a total catastrophy.

Good Luck :)

Use a lot of heat where the bolt screws into the gearcase, use two propane torch's if you have to. Slowly work the bolt back, and forth. You can't really get any penetrating oil where it is needed with the gearcase pulled up tight. When working the bolt back, and forth, as soon as the gearcase drop's a little, then use oil.

Again this is a good place to make sure of coating the threads well with anti-seize or gasket cement upon re-assembly to prevent more of the same problems in the future.

Yes.. part of the plate is missing.. The worst part of the motor..Will that make much of a difference?.. That bolt finally came free with heat heat and more heat.. The top of the bolt twisted and i almost snapped it..whew.. Going SLOWLY and re heating, it did come free. I will replace with a new one. The entire shaft was caked in old white something.. impellor looked good but i will still replace Thanks guys..

I am sort of late in helping you but I had a similar problem recently and thought I'd share how I handled it. If bolt breaks...no big deal. Buy and use a $20.00 Bolt Extraction Kit... they are helpful. Or, simply drill the bolt out without damaging threads... by leaving a thin skin of the existing bolt and run a tap of same size into socket ...it will remove leftover skin of previous bolt. Then you are ready to go.

Re: need help.. Easy for you guys..

The white stuff is aluminium oxide created by the galvanic reaction between the stainless steel bolt and the aluminium housing. Brush it off and run a wire brush down through the extension where the bolt runs through to remove it all. I paint the entire shand of the bolt with gasket sealer. Other people use grease or marine grade anti-sieze. Do not the copper coloured stuff.
They all seem to help for the next time.
I strongly warn you against using the bolt-extractors of the ez-out variety, unless you want to learn about electo-discharge machining. Prevention or the torch-wrench are you're only hope.
