I have a 1984 Evinrude 150 that use to run fast and strong, I had a very in-depth tune up done on it and it has been in rough shape ever since. First, after running it wide open on plane it would just die, but then start right back up, second, after it starts and I give it throttle it bogs out and dies and now, in order to keep it running I need to prime the bulb continuously. Any ideas or comments???

Fuel starvation. Bad fuel pump, air leak on suction side of pump, tank not properly vented, etc. Carbs might also have some crap in them, but I'd bet on fuel starvation external to carbs. When did it run right last?

BTW, what did your "very in-depth tuneup" consist of? There's almost nothing to adjust, maybe plugs and gear oil get changed, grease fittings greased.

This motor is werid it starts on the first crank usually, but when you give it trottle it does not have enough power to plane out then it bogs out and dies, but starts right back up. It last ran good in the spring of 05. The tune up according to the service place was whatever the manual suggested.

JBFX4, if the main jets were plugged, the bulb would still hold firm.
That engine has 2 fuel pumps, I believe, and each pump is a bit different kit-wise.
This could be a vent issue or bad fuel as stated above, but if you have to go back and pump the bulb, either the engine pumps aren't working right, a clogged vent, or even a cracked fuel-line/loose connection.

Re: 1984 Evinrude 150 XP

I traced the fuel lines and have found that their are two points where fuel is dumped into the carbs, I unscrewed both of them and they had a screen like material (I am assuming) is some type of filter behind them when I went to put them back one screwed on tight but one seems to be stripped and very loose (I can wiggle it up and down and it will not tighten up) is it possible that air is being sucked in here as stated above?

As far as running 89 octane, I normally do, I usually also add a bottle of carb cleaner during each fueling too.

Thanks for the help guys…

Yes, that has to seal, and yes, it's likely pulling air and causing (could) a lean condition that, as you may know, could melt pistons...
