69 johnson 115 not firing

hello , i am new to this forum and to boat ownership. i purchased a 79 17 foot mark twain with a 69 evinrude 115, when we brought it home we cranked it and it would not fire, after some fooling around with the neutral safety switch it finally ran until we shifted it in forward, then it died. hasnt started since, when starting it turns over but is not firing at the plugs so i believe it is an ignition problem, now as previously mentioned i am new to this so dont really know where to start as far as troubleshooting the elimination process and tracking down the cause, please help, i would really like to get this boat in the water. thanks

hey 17mark---i'm new to most of this too, but you might be able to find some helpful info in the faq section under "outboard wont start". other than that i'm no good in helpin other than to suggest, or insist that you buy a model specific manual for your motor. thats what everyone told me and it is a world of help. good luck!
