Prop Play

I have a 1969 Johnson 55 hp engine Hydro-electric drive..I was wondering how much play should there be in the prop before the gears grab.

It'll be in gear until a Neutral or Reverse signal (motor has to be running) take it out of Forward. In-and-out play will be slight. You'll be able to rock the prop back and forth quite a ways, 1/4 turn or so.
