With thanks to everyone here for the advice, and the resources in these forums i have finally gotten my 18 horse evinrude running like a top.
Wanted to share a couple things i learned in the process..When taking apart a lower unit to replace the impellor, make sure to line up the water tube correctly. A water tube that is not lined up in the lower unit CAN spray water from a loose lower unit and spray 20 year old exhaust water in your eye. You can remove a questionable thermostat completely and run it ok,
swearing at a lower unit does NOT make the job easier, PB Blaster will ruin old blue paint,If the lower unit doesn't snug up when re-installing, it is possible to slowly and evenly tourque the bolts to snug it even if it wont push up by hand. The fast slow start tab on the throttle handle can become wedged in place and cause 1/3 throttle. Said handle is spring loaded and will fly apart upon removal if not held onto, Springs cannot be located on dirty blue carpet..all this being said.. Thanks to you guys, this thing is running mint.. I have turned a 50$ questionable unit into what i believe is a 600$ dependable workhorse with plenty of get up for me.. Thanks Iboats..
