Hi, I have a 33 HP Evinrude from the 1970's. It came as an extra engine I bought. I dont have the exact model number in frot of me. The probem is that the engine has seized or so that's what the guy that sold me the boat said but he wasnt sure. It seems that there is a little play in it but you definitely cant crank it. What could be the possible problem and what could be some solutions and how much $$ are we talking about. Thanks for any help.

The last year for the 33hp's was 1970....

Will the prop still turn in neutral? Sure it's not in gear and the gear case isn't froze up? Drain the gear lube and see what comes out.

To find out the problem, you may need to pull the head and check the cylinders. If it set for a long time, could be the rod bearings and crank bearings could be rusted up.

I would try and locate the problem first before thinking about repairs. May be just not worth the money.

It could be a number of things. It could be the drive shaft seized in the gearcase.Could be a broken connecting rod, seized piston or a combination.Pistons/cylinder may be rusted.
Could be something relatively minor like an ignition part out of place or a safety mechanism
preventing cranking.Obviously difficult to diagnos from here.Professional repair guessing could range from $100 to $1,000 or more. You could pull the plugs and try to turn it and look in the plug holes to see if the pistons move.
If you have a mechanically inclined friend they may be able to get an idea what is going on.
Or a shop might do a very basic diagnosis for a small fee.

As suggested above, the seizing may pertain to either the powerhead OR the lower unit.

Remove the lower unit first in order to determine in which unit the problem lies.

I have seen more than one of them style lower units filled with water and rusted up solid.
