1994 70 hp fuel pump?

my 1994 70 hp got water in the tank from heavy rain. i pumped out the water (which was pretty dirty), cleaned all the lines w/ compressed air, changed both fuel filters, spark plugs are good, drained carbs many times, and don't think there is an air leak. the engine will run at high speed, but dies out after 2-5 seconds in neutral. i thought there might be crud in the fuel pump or jets, but don't know how to remedy either of these situations. any suggestions? am i looking in the right place, or could it be something else

Will it stay running if you pump the bulb?

pumping the bulb helps a little, but after a couple of seconds it dies out again.

See if you can keep it idling by intermittedly pushing in on the key primer.If you can ,one or more of the carb orifices may be fouled.If you can keep it idling by continually squeezing the fuel primer bulb,it may be a failing fuel pump or fuel line leak.<br /><br />Does the fuel primer bulb pump up firm and hold before cold starting?If not,you may have a fuel leak between bulb and carb inlets or carb float needle valves not holding.<br /><br />Did you attempt to run the engine before you discovered the water in the fuel tank?If so ,I recommend dismantling and cleaning all three carbs.

thanks for the advice. the primer bulb does firm up before starting. i have not tried the key primer. i think it's the fuel pump, but don't know waht to do with it, disassemble and clean? this is unchartered territory for me. i don't like taking apart things i don't know how. and even if i did i don't know what to look for.
