Just bought a 93 Evinrude Ocean Pro. Each time I try to start the motor I blow a fuse. Fuse is located in red wire. Before buying the motor the owner cranked and ran the motor with no problem. Installed the motor on my boat and connected to my wiring harness. Blows fuse everytime trying to crank. Hooked motor to harness bought with motor and fuse continues to blow. Can anyone tellme what each wire should be connected to and possible reasons fuse continues to blow?

Thanks

they blow becuase to much current is trying to flow. most likly something is hooked up incorrectly or the fuse size is to small.
best I recall it should be a 20 amp.
it is the safty "valve" for the 12v feed to the ign switch and any circuits the switch feeds, either originally or whatever is now wired into the circuit.
the starter solinoid will draw 2 amps or so when the key is in the start position. now ya gotta find where the other 18 amps are going.
make sure the solinoid primary wires are on correctly.
if the fuse does not blow at key on nor at key on choke on and only at engine start position carefully inspect the yellow/red wiring from the switch to the solinoid.
do you have a multi meter and an idea of how to use it ?

It is a 20 amp fuse. Yes I have a multimeter, but does not register amps. Have a decent idea of how to use it. Where and what wires are to be connected to the solinoid? I believe the wiring harness is a six wire harness. Can you tell me what each of the wires is for and where they should connect?

Thanks

Did you install the motor using the factory harnesses and red connectors for both the engine and boat, or is it a "cobbled together" and full of spliced of wires?

Yes, It is a factory harness for both the engine and the boat.

Does it blow when you first turn the key on? Or only when you engage the starter? Or when you push the key in for the primer?

OK, make sure all the connections on the solenoid are correct and not somehow touching each other. Then make sure the large wire from the solenoid to the starter isn't touching something.

exactly what color wires attach to each connection on the solenoid. I want to make sure I have it connected properly. Thanks for all of the information

Trace the yellow or yellow/red stripe wires from the key swtich, to the control box neutral safety switch, through the boat and on to the engine connector. Then trace from the engine connection to the solenoid and the yellow/red wire that goes to the power pack that can get pinched or shorted if not routed correctly under the pack.

If all checks good, make sure the key switch and the solenoid is not shorted internally when activated.
