35amp Flywheel - Ring Gear Dia Difference

Working on one of the 1990 200/225hp models which of course has the dome type 35amp associated flywheel. The normal diameter of the flywheel teeth, across the center, tooth tip to tooth tip, is the normal 12-1/4" diameter.

The owner ordered and had delivered a replacement flywheel. However, this new flywheel's ring gear diameter, being measured identically as above, measures a diameter of only 11-3/4".

Obviously the electric starter bendix gear would not be able to engage this new flywheel's ring gear.

My question is: This flywheel with the 11-3/4" diameter ring gear... what does it fit? I don't recall ever encountering a flywheel such as this.

I'm not sure of the exact measurement but there is a difference between the V6 and V4. The V6 and V8 are the same.

The timing break marks on the center hub magnet must be the same too. I have a couple of sheets showing the locations somewhere. If you have a fax # I'll look for them and shoot them over.

Like the esteemed Mr. DHadley, I've never measured the flywheel diamter but there are different flywheels for the '86 and '87 engines and the '88 and later ones. That is also the time they went to computer controlled ignitions and used a larger cubic inch cylinder block.

Is it possible that some other make engine such as Yamaha for instance incorporates this smaller 11-3/4" diameter ring gear flywheel?

It looks identical to the high dome type 35amp type flywheel used on the 1986-1992 V6 loop charged engines excepting the ring gear diameter.

Something new after so many years to bug me!

Thats the difference in the V6 compared to the V4. The ring gear ID is the same but the OD is different. I think -- think -- it's because the V6 & V8 use a gear reduction starter and the V4 doesnt. There may be a difference in the mounting bolt bosses, I don't have a V4 to look at right now.

I've used both ring gears on the race flywheel (flex wheel). It just depends on which motor we have.
