Motor won't shut off

My boat has a 50 HP Mercury that won’t shut off when I turn off the ignition switch. I have to pull the gas line to let it run out of gas before it will stop. I’ve replaced the ignition switch to no avail. The problem used to be intermittent but now happens every time. Sure seems like something electrical in the motor – maybe the magneto has to be grounded in order to shut the motor off…? I don't know much about the insides of these. Are there some wires I can check?
Additionally, the shift linkage won't allow me to increase throttle without engaging the prop...
Thank you for your time!
Daniel

Re: Motor won't shut off

have a look at my thread from about two-three weeks ago, titled "engine won't shut off!" the powerpacks have to go to ground via a black wire with stripe when you turn the key off. if there is a disruption in that circuit, it is likely at the power pack, but could be anywhere anong the line to or from the key switch

Thanks for the tip - I'll go have a look at that thread. I'm new to the forum and am not sure how to find the thread, but I'll see if I can find your user name and search that way. Thanks again!
