Had this for a while in my stash. Runs fine. Painted flat white, but found 20hp on the cowl. No plate, and BRP says 20hp Johnson's were first year in 85. The stumper is welsh plug has R8288667 ..... not even close to a Johnny Mod #. Only other # is on Exhaust plate 3267-13a, probably a P/N.. Comparing to other Johnson, I'm going with 85 (I want to sell it). It does have a Powerpack, and a SS...any try at this is welcome and appreciated! Robby

The R in your block number marks it as a Replacement powerhead. Being that that was your only shot at finding the original model number, and the motor has been repainted, you're likely stuck. Are the various brackets and recoil housing black or white? 1986 on up had black powerheads, but being that your motor has a replacement powerhead, you'll be looking at the various brackets, etc. for the black parts. A 1985 would have a white powerhead (same as rest of motor). 1991 or 1992 they went to a plastic capped carburetor, where prior motors had an all metal bodied carb.

Also, if it's a tiller model, 1985 was the last year using the gear-driven throttle at the tiller joint. 1986 on up used a cable...

Hope that helps...
- Scott

Heres two pix. Its gotta be an 85, originally anyway, as its Tiller, and geared. Seems a real mish-mash of parts, but its a Johnson, so its still a good runner. Spits back sometimes at idle, but I don't know if its crank seals or just lean or ?. Goes like a scalded cat WFO on a light 14 foot old Sears (71) composite boat. Torque tab all the way over, and still need an extension on the handle and need to hang on. Thanks for the help...Robby
Hi SCAATY,
It's later than 1985 as the tiller is cable - not gear - driven. Also, the recoil is black (under that khaki goobered paint job), not bare aluminum and it has spacers under the recoil feet. I've got a 1991 in my shop right now that looks just like it, but it's different from the 1985 and 1986 models I have at the moment.
Also, both the 1985 and 1986 in the shop have the choke/primer on the left of the face of the lower cowl, while yours is on the right - just like the 1991 I've got. And thirdly, the tiller and shift on your motor are the same as the 1991, and quite different from the 1985 and 1986, in that the 1991 is a bolt-on deal, while the 80s models had the tiller mount cast-in to the carry handle and the shift was on the side.
Bottom line, your motor is more likely early 1990s...
Hope that helps...
- Scott

Hmmm... Just noticed that yours does not have the plastic top carb. Might be somewhere in between my 1991 and 1986 then? Okay, so I narrowed it down to three years (1987 to 1990) - best I can do...
- Scott

Re: YearJohnny-80's20hp-an expert stumper

The story continues...it was painted that khaki color and blue on the cowl when I got it from a friend (it was his ex-girlfriends and on a pontoon-painted weird to discourage getting ripped off was the story). And sorry about the cable/gear mistake. Last thing I did yesterday was work on a 62 5 1/2 Johnny, and I still had that image of a gear tiller in my head. Plus I'm a lot dumber than I think at times..and age setting in.
Think we could narrow it down with a number off the carb? (If I can find one)If not, going with 87-90. Thanks for the help Scott
