Did someone pull the kill switch lanyard? Have you checked for spark? Did you just acquire this motor? What's your starting procedure?

Year 1996. Do you think it might be the plugs? The guy I bought from said they have not been changed in a while. What gap do I need to set plugs. Thanks !

Re: JOHNSON 90 HP OUTBOARD

It could be many things!!!
Do you know the history of the motor, maintenance and all?

Step back and test some basics and report back.
-Take a compression test
-Check for spark on all cylinders

If this checks out look to the fuel system. If it has been laid up for awhile the carbs will need to be rebuild, probably the fuel pump too.

Fuse ok? It's next to the starter solenoid.

Fuse is ok. The motor was doing the same thing toward the end of last summer, but after turning switch and trying several times it would fire up. This year it just sits and turns over, but will not fire up.

Just a wild guess here...but I'd start by making sure the ignition/kill switch isn't the culprit. There is a big red "cannon" plug on your motor. Unplug it and check spark. If you try to start the motor and it does start, you will have no way to shut it off with that plug undone other than manually flooding it with the primer.

Re: JOHNSON 90 HP OUTBOARD

Things aren't always as they seem. The starter would crank the motor but there would be no spark for ignition. Check the individual spark plugs...they need to jump a 7/16" gap with a hot thick white spark.
Might be a good idea to get a factory manual. Tons of info with pics.

Re: JOHNSON 90 HP OUTBOARD

Try taking ALL* of the plugs out and see if you get spark just attaching the wires and placing the plugs against the block.

(Its really not a good idea to hold them.)

* This eliminates the compression and speeds up the RPM.

Have you tried any of the above? No one said change plugs. Are you even getting a spark?

Check to be sure the primer solenoid is working.
