Motor Stalling out

Hello All, I am new to this site but I have a 1988 Skeeter with a GT150 on it. I just replaced the voltage regulator and starter on the motor. I had a little trouble getting it started the first time this year but that's fairly typical. I got the motor running but it idled real hard and would stall out when I would try to put it in gear. It eventually came around and I could idle around but I still cannot get more than 1/4 throtle out of it before it starts to die out. I changed the primer ball and checked the fuel filter now I am wondering what to look for next. I have to many shop bills prior and want to try and fix it myself. Any suggestions? Thanks

Welocome to the site Shinsky. I know I had a problem with a motor allot smaller than yours like that, it was the head gasket in my case. Just FYI. Others will be along soon to help.

Well, although it could be many things, the most likely problem is in your carbs. Was the gas treated before it was stored last season? Untreated gas will eventually turn into a gummy mess and block all the passages in your carbs.

The only solution to this is to remove your carbs and give them a thorough cleaning with a carb cleaning solution (either aerosol or dip depending on your carbs)and install rebuild kits (ie. new gaskets, needle valve and carb float). Even if this doesn't turn out to be your problem, not a bad maintenance idea anyway. Reasonably simple task, although if unfamiliar with those carbs, a manual with lots of pictures will certainly help.

Good luck!

Lots of things to look at before getting into carbs. What do the plugs look like? Compression test. Squeeze primer bulb when engine tends to stall. If it picks up, you have a fuel pump problem. Is the fuel fresh? Do you have good spark on all cylinders. Is the throttle linkage in place and functioning properly. There is certainly no harm in rebuilding carbs but why do it if its not necessary -- and certainly not as the first thing to do when experiencing an engine problem. Always to the logical and inexpensive things first.

I pulled the air intake off and the face of the carb looks clean. The plugs are soaked with oil. I couldn't get the primer ball to get stiff so I bought a new one and it will not get hard either. I am thinking it's a blockage in the fuel line between the tank and primer ball. Any suggetions on how to get that line cleaned out?

If the primer bulb won't get hard before starting the engine ,my guess is that one or more of the carb floats are sticking and dumping fuel. This would also account for the wet plugs.I'm with Brew on this one.My moneys on carburetor issue.Just looking at the carb flaps is no indication of whether the carb orifices and passages are clear.

Also ,inspect the pickup tube in fuel tank for blockage. It should have a strainer on the end.
