1994 Evinrude 48SPL surging at full throttle.

I have a 1994 Evinrude 48SPL that sometimes surges (acts like it's starving for fuel) at partial or full throttle after the engine has been run for a while . It starts and idles perfect, though. I ordered a new fuel pump kit and have already replaced the fuel line, both quick connects and the primer bulb. Am I on the right track? Since this is an intermittent problem not really sure the fuel pump is the problem.

It sounds like the same thing that was happening to me with my 2004 Johnson 115 4-stroke. It was intermittent as well and, of course, when I took it in to have it looked at it would'nt do it. I'm not sure why, but I later installed a fuel flow meter and the problem went away. I havn't had any problems since. Before I put the meter in I had to shut down the engine and restart it to get it past the problem.

Forgot to mention I can keep it running smoothly by squeezing the primer bulb. Have 2 portable tanks and it does this with both tanks.

I have a '96 and it's now doing the same thing. Is this a carbureator rebuild problem or something more costly? It runs perfectly at low and idle speeds up to midrange, then the surging and also a lack of power as well, I think. I drained gas, checked the link and sync settings but no change. One guy told me that he thought my power pack was going but it was just a guess.<br /><br />HELP!!

cousin....try a fuel line with a known good primer bulb and make sure the fuel tank is venting. Double check all the fuel line connections and fuel lines. Replace any that are hard. Hard lines lose their grip at connection points and can suck air.

I did all of that first as they were the easiest. I have new lines, filter, primer bulb and have fresh gas mixture as well. The tanks (remote ones) were also emptied and cleaned before the season too.

Is it an OMC bulb or generic?(Tempo)

They are OMC tanks as is the primer bulb.

Then I would say yes, you are on the right track with the fuel pump replacement....

If squeezing the primer bulb helps then the fuel pump is very likely the problem.

It turned out to be the fuel pump. Replaced with a complete OEM pump (didn't rebuild 'cause of brittle, cracked plastic on old one) .
