Hey guys

Well I changed the water pump on the motor and today is the first day took her out on the water
She is pumping water great however
When I put motor in drive and start to idle up she seems to start slipping and banging then she will clear up and start going with no problems so I kept her out when I was on my way back into the launch she start slipping and banging as soon as put into to gear
Does it sound like she is low on gear oil ?
Thanks in advance for all the help guys

Sounds like the lower unit clutch dog is not engaging the forward gear properly. Possible that the shift linkage has moved during reassembly. Try adjusting the shift linkage next to the carb first. If this adjustment does not help, you may need to remove the lower unit again and reset the height of the shift rod.

Re: 1975 115HP EVINRUDE -LOWER UNIT HELP PLEASE

Sounds right, except that the shift rod on the 1975 model is only adjusted at the top by the small cylindrical swivel. If the link is disconnected you can turn the swivel with a stiff wire with a short 45 degree bend at the end without removing the gearcase.

Forward gear is the downward movement of the shift rod.

Put the motor in forward gear, disconnect the cable, and assure that the shift rod is down completely without the horizontal linkage touching the floor of the lower cowl. Then adjust the cable to the connection and reconnect it.

BTW, don't gamble on the gear oil. Check it. This is a hydraulic shift assist. It won't work right without oil and it can be harmed by water.

You'll need a manual.

If you do have water intrusion.

You can do a pressure test.

Then reseal as needed.

Sounds like, whoever, was talking about prop shaft seals.

i-boats, may have them.

Or, you should be able get the parts, at any J/E dealer.

As far as hard, if your mechanically inclined. And get a good manual , you shouldn't have a problem.

Good-Luck,

KYhunter :)

A lower reseal kit will come with the two propshaft seals, new shift rod seal, carrier o-ring, and upper drive shaft seals. You will need to drop the lower to install this kit.

Hey Guys
Well I checked to make sure the rod is going all the way down and it seems to be the arm is basically touching the housing I did add gear oil though as she was low is it safe to say that was the problem or do you think it is still in the cluch rod ?
thanks for the help

Re: 1975 115HP EVINRUDE -LOWER UNIT HELP PLEASE

I think you still need to try to get a little more length in the shift rod if the horizontal arm is actually hitting the floor of the lower cowl. This will allow the shift rod to fully engage the gears below.

Just release the swivel again and try to turn it counterclockwise with a stiff wire with a little bend at the end. It will take a few minutes of going back and forth, but it is usually quicker than removing the whole gearcase.

Adding oil to the gearcase is not good enough. If you know that the unit is leaking, you need to fix it. If it is not leaking, you should have drained it and put all new gear oil in it. You said previously that you knew there was water.

In case you are not aware of the economics, click on "Lower Units" at the top of this page and have a look at the prices of rebuilt units.

The swivel needs to come up so that the shift rod can go further down. Turn the swivel counterclockwise.

I have never used the Sierra seal kit on this lower unit, so I can't tell if it's good or not. I know the OMC/BRP one is good. Someone who has tried the Sierra will probably jump in here.

Re: 1975 115HP EVINRUDE -LOWER UNIT HELP PLEASE

Hey Guys

Well I did turn the rod and bring rod up took boat down to lake and as soon as she started to throttle up she would slip and bang so I brought rod up more this time I think all the way tried again she did the same thing so I left her in slow speed and she sounded horriable the motor was shaking and the fumes were terriable
So when I got home I drained the gear oil no sign of water in it this time but then spun the prop by hand and you can hear a noise that sounds like maybe a bearing ? any idea of whats goin on
Thanks

I think that you have lost a gear and that you will have to open the gearcase and repair it.

You cannot turn the shift rod. If you did you would break something.

The 50HP unit will defintely not work.

The 140 probably will not work either. Find out if the skeg slants back or goes straight down like yours does.
