I picked up a 25 Johnson OB (think it's an 88 no manual) last year and it was very clean and ran like a champ all year. I have 2 issues.
1. I changed the lower unit lube and was wondering if there is anything else that I should do before I take it out on tha drink?

2. Took off the cover and there is little spatters of like a black sludge (smears bad when I wipe) here and there inside the cover. The parts are clean, but it's on the cover and some of it leaks out a little near the tiller joint.(Not sure if I said that right...where the handle meets the engine). She still runs good but I have no clue what this is. Maybe a leak?

I am fairly mechanical and know a little about OLD outboards, but not sure what to do here. Any advice would be great.....
Thanks,
Jim

you got it last year, do you know the last time the water pump impeller was changed? i'd use some degreaser and clean out the cover, and see it the sludge comes back. could be from an old problem.

Not sure about the water pump. I try not to bother with anything that can't be seen without coming apart or doesn't come off without tools. I guess I should check so....where do I start?

deeznuts

The water pump is critical on outboards. It really should be changed every 2 years. They have a rubber impeller that tends to take a "set" in one direction(Rotation) and over time will lose their ability to cool the engine properly. It's one of the most overlooked service items that should really be a top priority. You need to order yourself a good factory manual that is specific to your engine. This will guide you through the waterpump replacement and all other needed service. There are a couple of tricks that members here can offer when you do it. Just ask if you get stuck. It's not a bad job. Mostly just unbolting and rebolting parts on. You will need to drop the lower unit to service the pump. You can order the parts here at iboats or get them at your dealer. Here are links to the manual and parts you will need. Also a little video to get you going on the pump....Also, look on the transom bracket(Port side) and post any numbers/letters that you find and we should be able to come up with a year for you....

Manual= kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

Water Pump= web page

Video=http://www.themarinedoctor.com/waterpump.wmv

deeznuts-
if you do in fact have an 88' 25hp Johnson than we have the same motor.....If thats the case I suggest you check ebay for a Factory Service Manual. I found one for my 25hp for $10 or $13, I can't remember. Its cheaper to do it that way if possible. It may not be on there one day, but if you check every so often they show up on a fairly regular basis.

Re: PLEASE HELP....25 johnson maintenance

Thanks guys. Other than the water pump and lower unit lube and carb cleaning then there is no other regular maintenance? I will get those numbers tomorrow and try to find out the year..Duh! Why didn't I think of that?

Re: PLEASE HELP....25 johnson maintenance

One other thing. When you say carb cleaning, no such critter, really.

On an outboard , to properly clean the carb/carbs.

They need to be removed , and thoroughly soaked / cleaned .

And blown out with compressed air. Making sure all orifices/ jets etc. are squeakey clean.

So, if you want to clean your carb .

Might just as well get the rebuild kit and do it right.

If you don't know when it was done last .

Its time to do it.

By the way , carbs are real easy .

Just be sure ,to have a clean spot, to work on them .

An old sheet , etc. is good.

Good-Luck

KYHunter
