I have a low spark problem, changed charging coil and bypassed cutoff switch. Problem never changed! Any suggestions?

1988 model number e28eslccr. Motor idled fine for approx 5 minutes. Then Died. Would not start. Finally got it started but only with me fingering the throttle linkage. Took it to the shop and they said my carb needed rebuilding and I had low spark. They rebuilt the carb and changed the charging coil and took the motor cutout switch out of the picture and I still have low spark and the shop is stumped? I am a very inexperienced novice at marine engines. Diagnostic check still says the charging coil? What are the chances that the magnets in the flywheel very weak and that is my problem?

Re: Evinrude 28 SPL low spark

i've got an 86 28spl. same mystery. drop your ignition switch. it probably has 6 poles. the one with a rubber cap(that's black/yellow).remove that wire by unscrewing the terminal screw. start up your boat as normal procedure. YOU WONT BE ABLE TO KILL THE MOTOR WITHOUT GROUNDING THAT WIRE BACK TO IT'S PLACE. IT WILL SHOCK YOU BUT GOOD SO PREPARE AHEAD with insulated tool. <br />this worked for me and the boat runs smoother and no hesitation or dying in the mid to full throttle up, like it did before.for now i've put a simple toggle on/off switch. it reads opposite, that is "on" will be OFF MOTOR. hope it works for you.
