I have a 1978 Evinrude 70HP 3 cylinder with three carbs. The Middle carb (#2) is poring gas out of the throttle body when it starts then the motor dies. Any ideas? I dont really want to take this to the shop. I am fairly handy person, and help is great

Hey 1978

Looks like it's time to tear the carbs down and do a good cleaning and rebuild with kits. Odds are the needle is sticking open and allowing fuel to continue flowing when the bowl is full. You can buy kits from any Johnson/Evinrude dealer or here at iboats and cleaner at any auto parts store. A manual will be needed to do the job....

PS-Carb kits...

web page

Factory Manual

kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

On the scale of 1 to 10 10 being the hardest what would you rate something like this?

Depending, a 5....It's really a matter of unbolting the carbs and disassembling them. Clean them out with spray cleaner and compressed air, install new parts and put them back on. If you are careful and mark where the linkage is set before you take them off, you should be able to assemble it without too many adjustments nessesary(Lync and Sync). I did mine on my 1991 70 HP(Same thing basically) and it took a couple of hours or so. It's really not that hard...Plenty of help here if you get stuck...

We know the middle cylinder runs slightly leaner than the top & bottom but that's an overkill....

Notice Rick said "carbs". Make sure to do all 3.

I just got a quote for the parts. $23.50 per carb for parts. SOunds like a decent price.

Very decenct when you think of the alternative price for a rebuild. Hope your going with OEM kits?

Here's one tip. When you have the carb buttoned up after the rebuild, tip it upside down and blow into the fuel inlet fitting. If air passes through something is wrong. Float is not set right, wrong inlet needle & seat, needle up side down, needle binding, etc. With the carb upside down it must behave the same way it would full of fuel. If you can't blow through the fitting, you got it right.
