Johnson repair estimate question

Hey guys, my grandpa has a '96 Johnson Fast Strike 150hp outboard. The motor is used an average of 8 weekends a year, and garage kept the rest. On a recent outing, the motor started stalling at half throttle. It would run ok until that exact point on the throttle, then die. By the end of the day it wouldn't start. He took it to a local marina and was told it was a bad "ignition modulator" (is this the same as a power pack?). The estimate for the part is $300 and the labor $650. Does this sound on target with what you guys know? Thanks in advance for any insight!

Power Pack retails around $260. Marinemech1 is right...$650 to change it out and check the engine is DARN high.

Thanks guys, what in your opinion would a more reasonable estimate be? I am thinking I'll call the marina and ask them for more details. Btw, any chance a non-mechanic with a manual could undertake this repair in a reasonable amount of time?

Boatfix.com has rapair packs for 134 bucks. I just replaced mine on my 96 fast strike and it was very easy to do, just a few screws and connectors to undo. Took me about 15 minutes. If you have a manual. you should change the optical sensor while your in there.

What horsepower is your outboard, and what manual would you suggest? Also, can you confirm that an "ignition modulator" is just a more expensive way to refer to a "power pack"? I want to make sure I'm replacing the correct part!

Ok new info, I called the marina and talked to one of the mechanics. It's the "ignition module" which is failing, which he says is more labor intensive due to it's location under the flywheel. I assume this is more difficult to undertake oneself? Does this now sound more in line with a $950 estimate?

no
under flywheel is only the stator
5 bolts and flywheel lifts off (with tool especially to reinstall) stator has only 4? screws
ignition module is mounted on back of motor under ignition coil
not sure what flat rate time is but should be less then 2 hours
i will look up tomorow
suggest you call brp's customer service number (sorry don't know it) and ask for a trained tech in your area
they will also help with flat rate times

Ok I called Bombardier and Mark there made it sound like the ignition module and power pack were the same thing (many names for the same part?). When I called Bayer marine in Tulsa the guy told me the ignition module is different from a power pack. Is this true?? I want to call him with some ammo tomorrow morning and be correct.

Re: Johnson repair estimate question

On that motor you have the optical (OIS) ignition system. You have an optical sensor which is located on top of the flywheel (under a plastic cover) and you have a powerpack which is bolted to the powerhead. Neither take very long to replace. Maybe the Bayer guys were referring to the optical sensor. It's called the Sensor Assembly in the BRP parts lists.
