When starting the motor both in a bucket and with muffs, the water does not discharge from the two holes at the top of the midsection. Only a lot of air blowing out and a few drops spitting out. Using the seloc book i unbolted the lower unit and it dropped only about 2in. What am i missing?<br />also when running in a tub of water, the motor seems to be cool, the lower unit is as cool as the water but the midsection gets hot how hot should it be?

Your not going to get a steady stream from the two holes it is just going to spit out of them. Water is also going to come out of the prop with the exhaust. You will not get a stream like the newer motors.

Did you disconnect the shift rod?

There is a bolt under torque tab above the prop and you have to remove shift rod linkage under carbs.

I have an orignal service manual i got of ebay for 74 115.I removed the shift cable and the throttle cable. Then I was able to get to the bell crank bolt with a wrench. You will also need to loosen the ball joint on the outside closest to you so that the two flat pieces on each side of the shift rod can spread apart.I can send you a pic of that page in my manual.
