small carb leak

I am still working on my '69 85hp Johnson. It runs well...got the shifting problem figured out. Once I shut the engine off though the carbs will leak the gass sitting in them. They are extremely small (the leaks) and it takes a few days before the leaking stops. When I squeeze the primer bulb it still gets stiff and the motor runs great.

My question is...am I doing any damage not rebuilding the carbs immediately and still running the motor? It is a project I plan on doing soon, however, I am taking the family on vacation with the boat in a week and am afraid doing the work now may lead to the boat not running in time for the trip...as I am not an experienced mechanic.

Thoughts?

jd,

Just make sure you have no hose leaks. Replacing the fuel hoses (under hood) is a good idea, with an engine of that age. Simple.

Some "spillage" is normal.

You can stop the leaks by running the engine out of fuel at shut down.

Re: small carb leak

thanks. all of the hoses look pretty good. It was hard as hell to identify the leak because it was so small. The tell tale that I had a leak was the fuel residue coming down the shaft after a day of running the engine. taking the cover off the engine looks pretty prestine aside from residue at the very bottom.
