If vents , OK.

And you have an onboard tank.

You can also check , the check valve , in the fitting on your tank.

Good - Luck,

KYHunter

Re: primer bulb

In the past I have bought aftermarket bulbs and had the check valve in them stick, causing the bulb to suck flat and the motor quit. It would usually happen soon after start up. I cured the the problem by only buying OEM bulbs and never had a problem with one since. Could you possibly have a defective bulb? I always make up my own fuel lines as I prefer the Mercury fuel hose as it seems to last longer and be more flexible, but I run JohnRude motors. The bulb can be either Quicksilver or OMC, I haven't had a problem with either one, I wish I could say the same of Tempo or Sierra!!!

Cheers,
Snow

Re: primer bulb

Good point on the bulb. Replace that first with an OMC one and go from there. Check the vent, too. The check valve is inside the stainless steel fitting on top of tank. Make sure your fuel lines are in good shape, as there is the remote possibility that a line may be collapsing internally between the bulb and tank...

Re: primer bulb

I had a simular problem, I spent some effort troubleshooting after trying the easy stuff.
I started by using a small portable tank tied directly into the engine and systematically worked back thru each added fitting and test running it. This requires a few extra barbed fittings and hose clamps.
I got all the way back to the tank and pulled the stainless steel right angle fitting out, replaced the check valve (usually aluminium sticking out of the stainless right angle.) By chance I found a tiny screen fitted into the pick-up tube and a couple bug carcasses clogging it. I say by chance, because It was hidden in the threaded joint and I didn't want to take that apart, afraid of breaking it off.
Anyhow, it may not be in all models of pick-up tubes; but keep your eyes open during the rebuild.

Re: primer bulb

(Fuel Anti Siphon Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Many of the later OMC V/6 engines incorporate a fuel restriction warning via a vaccum device attached to the powerhead. If the engine overheats, or if you have a fuel restriction, the warning is the same.... a steady constant beep.

NOTE... Only the V/6 & V/8 engines have the above "Fuel Restriction Warning". The warning horn will not sound on the other models.

The fact that a engine is not overheating, but the warning horn sounds off with a constant steady beep, and that the rpms drop drastically would indicate that the engine is starving for fuel due to a fuel restriction. Check the built in fuel tank where the rubber fuel line attaches to the tank fitting. That fitting is in all probability a "Anti Siphon" valve which is notorious for sticking in a semi closed position. It will be aluminum, about 2" long, and the insides of it will consist of a spring, a ball, and a ball seat. If this valve exists, remove it, knock out those inner components which will convert it to a straight through fitting, then re-install it. Hopefully that cures the problem.

The above procedure will cure a restriction problem with the anti siphon valve as stated. BUT, it may also allow fuel to drain backwards to the fuel tank when the engine is not running (siphoning backwards) due to the fact that the carburetors/fuel pump etc are higher than the fuel tank. This condition is not an absolute as the valves in the fuel primer bulb usually prevent this backwards siphoning problem. However.... if this does take place, the cure would be to install a new anti siphon valve.

Re: primer bulb

Fuel pump or air leak in fuel line from primer to tank. Try running on a separate 6 gallon tank and use a new fuel line, fittings and bulb. If no go, replace the pump..
