YOu need the most important tool of all: THIS

Other then that it is extremely simply. A few bolts and maybe a screw or two. I would highly recommend getting that manuel. You can also get all the other parts you need here at Iboats. Like the parts you will need here

GOOD LUCK! And don't be afraid to ask us for help.

Re: How to replace impeller?

Getting the old impeller off is a bit of a pain, even with the instructions. I ended up splitting the brass collar with a coal chisel. Take your time and it's easy. I built a jig out of 2x4s and screwed it to my bench tohold the unit in place for work, But I was doing twin 115s so making special tools is a bit more worth while. Change our lower unit oil and regrease your prop shaft while your at it. Make sure to grease the splines on the drive shaft before reassembling into the pwrhead. Seen a few stuck that way

This information is useful, but where is the impeller and how do I get to it. Thanks!

If you don't know where it is, you NEED a manual.

If you don't want to buy one, visit your local library. They may not have the exact manual for your engine but they will have one that's close enough to at least show where the impeller is located and what it looks like. You need to drop the lower unit (leg). The water pump is driven by the drive shaft. Without a manual I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that you post back here asking why you can only lower the leg an inch.

As someone already mentioned, that you don't know where it is makes it essential that you get the manual, either by buying one (best) or getting one from the library (temporary).

It's not an intuitive job, changing the impeller on that engine, and if you go it alone, you'll break something and turn a fairly straightforward job into an expensive repair.

Folks are not being funny with you. It would take far more than a simple message here to tell you how to do it, and you'd need illustrations, especially if you are inexperienced with lower unit removal on larger outboards.

Take their advice, and mine. Start by getting the manual for your model, then go from there. If you still have questions, after you have the manual, someone here will be able to help you.

Cool video, especially the part where the guy can't get the impeller into the housing without help. It does illustrate that it's easy to get into a bit of trouble, especially working by yourself.

It also doesn't help this guy get that lower unit off his engine or back on. Lots of places where a guy might have to turn of the video camera so as not to hear some bad language.

How many folks have forgotten that o-ring on the drive shaft? A guy really needs that manual in hand.

Wasn't meant as a guide for removal. Just as a primer of things to come....I'm sure someone on this forum has done a waterpump job on a 115 that could send him in the right direction until the Manual arrives...

Re: How to replace impeller?

Rick,

I understand. It's just that I hate to see someone with no experience try any work on a big outboard without a manual. And someone who doesn't know where the impeller is could do some expensive damage trying to find out.

Look at the trouble just trying to get the waterpump housing back over the new impeller in the video. How many times have we seen questions where someone has bent the blades the wrong way, left out the key, or done any of a number of things we all have done when we were inexperienced.

That's the reason so many people here are insistent that people get a manual. I've changed a few impellers, but I'd have no idea how to disconnect the shift rod on a 115, since I've never done one on that engine. I'd check the manual, even if it was one of the aftermarket manuals.

There's nothing wrong with videos like that one. They can be really helpful, but they don't substitute for a manual.

Re: How to replace impeller?

My biggest problem on my motors was trying to pull the lower unit without reading the manual, I grew up with mercurys and the shift rod was splined into the power head. The johnson/evenrude collection has a cotter pin under the carbs. I tink you could have the potential for damage on the lower unit if you pull it out of there?

Re: How to replace impeller?

Not only jerking and pounding trying to get it off, but turning the shift rod out of adjustment while the leg is off also causes problems. Since the poster doesn't know where the water pump is, it's very likely things like clevis or hitch pins, shift rods, and carbs are probably not readily identifiable either. Yup -- get the manual. Then if you can't follow it, come back for specific help. We are not here to rewrite service manuals.
