Need help, can't get boat started....

Hello all,

I have a 1961 Johnson 40 H.P. Outboard. I bought it last spring and used it for one season. I noticed that the boat would drain my battery if I kept it hooked up, so I could not troll. I would speed to the location I wanted to fish in and then unhook the battery.

I bought a new solenoid this spring and it looks different then the original. The original has only one small terminal and two big terminals. The new one has two small terminals.

I tested the new solenoid by jumping 12 volt battery power to the two small terminals and there was a click and then I tested the voltage at the large terminals and there was zero voltage (like the manual said there should be). So the new solenoid is working.

I have absolutely no idea how to hook up the new solenoid. The last owner of the outboard removed tons of wiring and all I have left is:

1) a connection from the negative ground on the battery to the metal frame of the outboard.
2) a connection from the positive battery to a large terminal solenoid.
3) a connection from the other large terminal to the starter.
4) a connection from the ignition wiring to one of the small terminals on the solenoid.

I jumped the battery straight to the starter and it fired right up. I can't for the life of me figure out what i am supposed to wire to what to get it to go.

Here is a pic of the solenoid:
You need to make a ground connection to the other small terminal on the solenoid. Then you have one wire from the ignition switch to one small terminal a ground connection to the other small terminal to make up the circuit.

When you turn the ign sw to start, 12V's is applied to one small terminal > through the coil in the solenoid > back to ground through the other small terminal.

Here's a simplified schematic. I hope it helps!

http://www.files.bz/files/3414/28sch_NG.cdr-CorelDRAW.pdf

Sounds like you've got some real "custom" wiring there. The safety switch and vacuum switch need to be connected properly in order to function. The vacuum switch must not be grounded unless the throttle position is low.

Simplified but easy to understand Paul. Nice drawing. Mind if I add it to my list of favorites?

That is one amazing drawing Paul! From what I can see, I am missing the wire (connection) from the Vacuum Cutout switch to the starter solenoid. This connection was never on the boat when I bought it. Because the solenoid only had one small terminal, it was just grounded to the frame of the outboard.

Thanks for your help, I'll try it again and see if I can't come up with something that is working for me.

Here is an amateur drawing of what the wiring looks like in my boat right now. It looks to me like I will have to "rewire" . Does this make any sense to anyone? I can't really understand it, but if anyone has any information about the best way to rewire this please type up. I look forward to many replies to get this wiring dilemma fixed.

Thanks to all in advance for your help!

Here is the pic...
Re: Need help, can't get boat started....

Wow, he's really got that messed up.
The wire that comes off the S terminal on the keyswitch should go to one of the small terminals on the solenoid. The other small terminal goes to the base of the vacuum cutout switch.
+(RED) from the battery should hook up to the Bat terminal on the keyswitch. Take it off the big terminal on the solenoid which is hooked up to the battery if that's convenient
The A terminal on the battery should hook up to the + side of accessories you want powered when the key is in the "on" position.

Really, you ought to have a fuse in the line between the battery and the Bat terminal, about 20 amps. But old boats were never wired with it. It would be a significant improvement in safety. If you want to do it by the book, the fuse should be within 7" of where that line comes off the battery or main battery cable.

I hope that helps out. I'll be gone sailing tomorrow but I'll check in tomorrow night. ;)
