Tachometer Question

I stumbled upon a digital tachometer at a garage sale. It is a Johnson/Evinrude OMC tachometer new in the box. Are digital tachs any good? It seems every boat out there, including the new boats, have analog tachs. I kind of like the idea of a digital tach, but not if it is garbage.

If it works and you like it, how can it be garbage? Any tach has a margin of error but it isn't enough to fret arout.

The OMC digital tachs are excellent. Extremely accurate througout the whole rpm range. The analogs have significant margins for error which can vary throughout the entire operating range. I have seen analogs 200 rpm low at 2000 and 300 rpm high at 5000. The only problem is getting used to the display.

I can't think of why anyone would want an analog tach, other than maybe esthetics. I just ditched two in favor of a FloScan fuel management system. The analog tachs didn't read the same, even when the rpm's were identical, etc. Bought panel space with something that is incredibly accurate, easy to read, etc. The Merc analog tachs had been changed three times in ten year due to failure ... goodbye and good ridance!
