I have a 1974 Johnson 50hp model #50ESL74M mech shift and the shift rod is froze. Is this something I can repair and loosen the rod? Or do I need a whole new lower unit? Also what other 50hp lower unit years will work on my 1974? This is the first outboard I have owned so I am pretty clueless about this. Thanks

If you trying to shift from the control with the engine not running, you will need to spin the prop so the clutch dog and gear lobes engage. If it still won't shift, try disconnecting the shift cable at the engine and try shifting the engine manually while spinning the prop.

Have you checked the gear lube? If you've had water intrusion into the gear case for a period of time, things may be rusted up.

Can you give us any maint history on the engine?

I have no maint. history on the engine. I just bought it. I thought that it just needed new shift cables but my dealer tells me the lower unit is bad. He says $650 for a rebuilt one. Is this high cause it sounds pretty high to me? Does anyone know where I can get the best deal on a lower unit? Thanks Mark
