I'm not finding that number. Which numbers/letters are you confidant in? Can you describe it a little? Does it have a cover? How many cylinders? Shifter? Any hope of a pic?

There is O[ABK]-nn outboards from the 30s but even the nn is never 20.

Re: HELP NEEDED to ID a motor

the only numbers on it are the ON - 20 and a serial number(hard to remember what it is now) it has two cylinders, shifter, it looks like it can be put to remote controls such as steering & throttle controls it is white in colour and 3 prong fuel hook up. it has a push button on the lower front and a red turning knurled knob in front, pull start cord in seperate opening, a crome ring 7" round on top must have been for holding down a emblem or something, I will try to get a picture this week end for you is there a way to ID throught the serial number?

Re: HELP NEEDED to ID a motor

Hi Arnpriortech,
The only motor that corresponds to that description (white motor, chrome ring on top, with 3-prong fuel connector) and has a 20 in the model number, would be a 1959 QD-20, 10hp. 1959 was the first year of the all white motors, and the last year for the pressure system with the 3-prong connector.
- Scott

Re: HELP NEEDED to ID a motor

I thank you all, and Pual those pictures suppled really helped id the motor, the decals are different on each year, I believe it is a 1959 10hp thank you so much.
I do not know if it works yet I picked it up at a garage sale for $5.00 not knowing if it works but I hope to get it running. is it worth repairing?
I have a 1979 16' sunray fiberglass boat with a 1980 70hp Johnson on it I thought I could use the small one for a trolling motor or kicker. any comments please..I am new to boating. I paid $900 for boat motor and trailer, was it worth it?

Re: HELP NEEDED to ID a motor

For 5-bucks you got a heck of a deal! If the motor is basically sound (nothing broken or missing, decent compression and even between the cylinders) then it's fairly easy to rejuvenate that little 5.5. Pretty much all of the consumable parts are readily and cheaply available - coils, points, condensers, waterpump impellers, lower unit seals, carb kits, etc., and most are even available right here through i-boats! For about $100 you can replace all those parts, give the motor a good decarboning and it should last another 50 years!
- Scott

Re: HELP NEEDED to ID a motor

This little 10hp I found has two props a 2 blade and a 3 blade any ideas as to which one I should use? I have also a spare lower part of the leg that the prop fits on with the horizontal type fin I can see it was replaced due to a crack. can it be welded and used for a spare?

Re: HELP NEEDED to ID a motor

See if you can find any numbers on those props so we can be sure what we've got. It ought to have come with a three bladed prop. The two bladed one may be an old high performance prop.

Either way, for kicker use the three bladed would be the one you want.

The lower part of the leg is called the "Lower Unit" or "Gearcase". The horizontal fin above the propeller is properly called the anti-ventilation plate and commonly called the cavitation plate. It's purpose is to prevent air from being sucked down and into the propeller, causing ventilation. The vertical fin below the propeller is called the skeg, and it's purpose is to protect the propeller from ground strikes.

If the anti-ventilation plate is cracked, it can be re-welded without disassembling the case.
