My son brought over his Evinrude 85 hp electric shift to replace the lower unit after he ran into a rock this week , a small piece is broken off the end, the casing seems alright, but it is always locked in foward now. I disconnected the green & blue wire from the lower unit, followed the testing instruction from a previous member & readings are normal, I also with a testing light turned on the ignition, pushed forward & no power, pushed neutral & power green, pushed reverse & power on green & blue, With the ignition, the trottle arm on start, is starts in forward, neutral & reverse but the prop always rotates foward.<br />HELP

The motor has to be running for it to shift. The solenoids operate valves, and a piston moves by oil pressure provided by a pump in the nose. It's automatically in forward until that piston takes it out. Check the gearlube.

he may have knocked the wires loose in the lower unit solenoids. if the are not energized the lower unit will not shift. it automatically defaults to forward when there is no power to the solenoids.

If he knocked a hole in the lower unit and lost all oil, it will stay in fwd gear.
