I need to remove the carbs for rebuilding on my '68 merc 650 4 cyl. I have removed the top and rear support frames which opened up some room but not enough. Do I need to remove the starter and distributor also? Any pointers? Thanks

The starter will have to come off, but the distributor wont. Also you will have to take off all the frame around the front of the motor, which will remove the switchbox, rectifier, and I think the selenoid. Be careful when doing this, and mark all wires. Also, the choke plunger will have to come off the choke selenoid, and it is plastic and WILL break if you are not careful.

Re: Removing Carbs on 650

Went ahead and pulled the front plate and starter, much better now. I found most of the wires coming up from the wiring connector in the lower cowling to be junk. Can I just cut back to the main connector and solder on new wires? Color coded and wrapped properly of course. I figure any wiring harness I find used will be in the same shape. Luckily the wires coming down from the stator are fine. Lots of work ahead! Thanks for the info. Mike

Can't say this enough. Get a manual.

It just makes things a lot easier on you.

I have a Mercury factory manual and under carb removal it says: remove choke linkages, remove 2 nuts holding carb on, remove carb. Thats it! Does an aftermarket manual have more info? At least as far as procedures go? Thanks Mike

I just pulled my carbs from a 115 inline without removing the starter or dist. but I think I'm going to have to pull the starter to get the main fuel line back on. Another tip I got here is take pictures as you tear down. So you can see how it goes back together.

As far as the wires go. You can solder or use plastic coated crimping joiners and replace the outer casing. Try to use same colour and amps if possible. You can also use the liquid lectric in a tube. I changed a few trigger wires (corroded) with same amp auto wire (tinned is better) and she works fine. NB Digi Pics are good.
Check this one..

Yes, you can mark (color code) all the shot wires and then rewire with new marine grade. Unfortunately, aside from all the hand contortions needed to get the carb nuts off, you'll have to be real careful getting the choke stuff off and then REALLY Careful pulliing the carbs together at the same time without damaging the sync rod. Break that and you're off on a parts search for quite a while. Take your time and go slow.
