Re: 1971 mercury 1350 outboard

Parts came in today, will change pump on Wednesday. I found a diagram of a cut away as my guide, anyone else have better info, or any important particular info?

You need to get a manual. Working on it without one is penny wise - pound foolish.

-W

Great motor : ). I just got done rebuilding mine and got all parts from Clams. The motor was suprisingly easy to work with. I was on a tight budget too so I went with the minimum on everything but wish I could have done more. It is running great though. It seems you need to replace your impeller. I never get steam coming out that is probably too hot. I have most diagrams of electical and even the cooling system. Ill post up the links tomorrow as everything is getting shut down for tonight. Let me know what you need. Specs etc.

While mine is running I can always hold my hand under the pee hole water. It is never too hot to keep it under. If that water is so hot it keeps you from holding your hand under it, then it is too hot. I would guess 140 +.

Opk,
I love the motor so far too, it's a shame to make it push my pontoon, but man does it fly! I can hold my hand under the pee water, but it's not a constant stream. The impeller is at least 20 years old, maybe even original. I got the motor from my inlaws, it's been garage kept and only run for 50 total hours or less. It had not been run in the last 10 years or so. My guess is the impeller is shot due to age, that's a long time!! I picked the parts up locally and we are changing it this morning, have a buddy that's done impellers on I/O's helping me. I'll report back after. Thanks!

OK,
Fun fun, the starter solenoid went out this morning, so I couldn't drive it over to my buddies to change the impeller. Ya know it's bad when you can't install a new part cuz something else broke! I guess after sitting as long as it did, a few things were bound to go to crap. Ordered the solenoid, be here by Friday. All it does is click, put 12V on the starter and it engaged, gotta be the solenoid.

try removing the battery, charging it overnight and reinstalling it. I too though I had lost the starter, but after charging the battery, everting was good - still haven't had the change to get the boat back in the water to throttle her up and see if I'm getting 14.2 volts or not, at idel, I'm getting only 12.7 - good luck

New solenoid installed yesterday, now it works! As for the tell tail pee hole, I took some weed wipper string and cleaned out the hole, now it pees real good! I will still replace the impeller, just not on my #1 list. I'll get it this fall. Thanks guys, great site & forum

New impeller installed yesterday, way easier than I thought it would have been. The old impeller looked like the original, but it was in great shape, all paddles intact. The new pump pushes 4X the water, the old impellers paddles must have been so warped they just let water slide between the paddles and the casing. Now the water is way cooler & shoots out like a jet!

Be sure and recheck the lower unit again for water before this winter, You don't want it to freeze and bust! Tim

Aww Tim,

We up here on Lake Norman don't winterize, we just leave em in the lake! Thanks for the heads up, I pumped a few ounces of new lube into the lower unit and nothing but good grease came out. The lube is only a few weeks old anyways.

Yep, feels like I'm winning this one too! Took her out for a 20 mile voyage yesterday, only used 6 gallons at 1/4 throttle for around 2 hours! Now all I gotta do is remodel the toon, we're going for the teaki toon look, I'll post pictures once completed. Thanks again for all your help, great forum.
