What year is my Mariner 80HP?

Neighbor gave me old motor. I need a repair man. but not sure where to look for serial #. A label plate on the steering control support reads "5001976". Is this the serial #? And if so does this mean it is a 1976? Neighbor swears it's a '80 or '81, but a dealer I had look at it in passing said it was more like late '70's.
