Hey there,
I currently have an old 1978 Cobra with a merc outboard and just find it is getting too small to play in. Anyways, I'd like to move up to something a little more modern. So, I've been looking in the local papers for runabouts and here are the current 3 options that I have tested. I was hoping I could get some opinions about the hulls and motors in these boats from you guys. Prices listed are Canadian dollars.

1)1993 Campion Allante 170 - 3.0L Merc I/O
-Very low hours (only 114!) original owner
-Sat on a lake most of its life, no leaks, dry bilge
-Nice exterior, no dings, just a little faded.
-Interior near perfect shape
-Was in storage for 2 years and seamed quite "sluggish" on take off, and only hit around 40 or so MPH
-He's asking $14,000

2)1993 Bayliner Capri 2050LX Olympic Edition. - 5.0L LX Merc, (205HP)
-Nice looking boat, sport seating
-Had a wet bilge, possible bad storing? was only covered with a tarp.
-A couple of dings in the hull, nothing looks major, except a docking gash on the read swim platform that would need to be fixed. (through the coatings to the fiberglas. A littel faded finish too.
-Interior OK. Front seats a little stained.
-Sundeck/Engine cover pivot broken, just held on by the gas lift shocks.
-not used very often, didn't start right away, took some time.
-Didn't seem to come on plane very fast, even with a 21p Hi-5 SS prop!
-I like the idea of the V-8, and I think there's more in this boat with a little TLC
-asking $15,000

3) 1997 Silverline 1755LS - 4.3L LX Merc (180HP?)
-Very nice looking boat, great shape inside and out, only one small paint mark.
-Newest, and looks like its in the best shape of the bunch.
-Dry bilge, even though its stored on a lake tied to a dock.
-Second owner. Gauge says 158 hrs, but he thinks it has more than that.
-19p Hi-5 SS Prop
-Wakeboard tower
-CD Player and Dual Battery setup
-Started right away and idled well.
-Voltmeter dropped to 10v when revving the motor... possible alternator not working?
-After driving a bit, it seemed like it should have more.... It hit hard and planed fast, then just petered out.
-I'm thinking the low voltage was causing the elevtric fuel pump to not provide the fuel it needs, or weak spark.
-Had to cut the test drive short.
-Owner gave me name/number of mechanic to talk to him about possible alternator problem.
-Asking $15,900

So far, I think I like 2 or 3, but both of them have their problems. The boat will be used primarily on the local river, with some time on the large Shuswap lake nearby. Boat will need to move around 5 adults and provide ample power for wakeboarding, tubing etc, as we like to do a lot of that.

Thanks for any help, opinions or tips you can offer, either about the hulls, the motors, or the problems noted.

Check out www.yacthworld.com Look up the boats that you are looking at.All those prices are a little high to me.Another thing, before buying a used boat,if you really find one that you like,HAVE IT SURVEYED!That is for the boat and motor.

Those prices seem awfully high to me. Especially the 93's.

The 4.3LX does not have an electric fuel pump. What RPM did it turn?

i think there high but thats because i am use to long island boats which are generaly USED-UP at this age

and there are also so many more for sale it keeps the value low

which means that other than recomending staying away from OMC because there out of buss its very hard to talk about price

tommays

Canadian dollars or not, those prices seem high.

As a comparison.

The Bayliner is listed on nadaguides.com at an average retail price of $5500.

I am not in your area and obviously the local market can demand a higher price if supply is low, but that is a pretty big difference.

According to google 1 CAD = 0.8237 USD right now.

That puts the $5500 at ~$6700.

I can't imagine paying twice the book value no matter what the market is.

Can you wait until fall to buy? I would hope prices would fall as demand does.

With all of that said, the Silverline would seem to be the best of the bunch. If it is big enough for what you want to do. An alternator is easy to replace.

I went through the same thing and the guys here saved me a lot of cash! Just look at it this way, you sounded like you are prepared to spend that much for one of the boats you mentioned, now say after reading these responses you find twice the boat for the same money. IT FEELS GREAT!! Id be pondering a trip to Washington state USA or at least do yourself a huge favor and check some archived posts on this forum as well as take heed to the advice youll get here. You wont regret it

Down here in Florida, there are always great deals on newer boats in great condition. Everyone wants to "move to Florida" and buy a boat. Well 3 years later, they realize there's a lot more to maintaining a boat than the boat show salesman told them so they put them up for sale to unload them.

You can look on line at the classified ads for the local newspapers and you can get a good idea of the potential savings. Just plan a vacation, spend a week, then tow home a nice boat.

Nav

Thanks for all the tips guys.

I though I had a deal going on the Silverline, but the seller backed out on me. Apparently a friend of his from Vancouver came up over the weekend and decided to buy the boat. I can't say we had a deal 100% but we talked about a price on the phone, then I was going to bring it to a marine mechanic I trust tomorrow. However not now....

So the search is on again.

I agree that the Bayliner is priced REALLY high. Now that I think about it though, I don't think I want to touch it as it just didn't seem like it had been well maintained by the previous owners. I don't really want to buy someone else's "junk".

Thanks for all of the tips though.

Prices seem real high to me, I paid 17,100 for my brand new 04 glastron 195 SX. 5.0 V-8 trailer included. When shopping look at the capacity of the boat verses size, my boat is only 18'7", but has a 9 person capacity. Also, you may not be a speed freak, but the more power the better, at 30-35 MPH the V-6 or V-8 will be purring along happily, while the 4 cylinder will near its top end.

Yes, I agree, the prices are high. However, compared to being in the USA, they will always be higher here. There are less boats to go around.

Good news though, a new add came on our local Autotrader today from a boat store in Kelowna (about 1.5/2 hrs drive) I called and they say they check out all the boats they get before selling on consignment. I'm going to try and get down there sometime tomorrow.

The boat is a 1997 Larsen 18.5". It has the 4.3L Merc, and they are asking $16,500 Cdn.

I think this sounds like its worth a drive for a look.

Larson is one of the better boats out there.

McDale - I don't have to remind you but the house mechanic represents the seller.
