G'Day. A quick history of Mariner, Mariner has always been owned by Mercury but in the 70's and early 80's the smaller mariners (60 HP and down) were made by Yamaha. by the late 80's all mariners were the same as Merc. Your V6 is pure Mercury.
As an aside some of the Merc/Mariner 4 strokes are made by Yamaha, some of the Yam 4 strokes are made by Merc

If you are interested in finding out what your engine is go to www.Mercurypartsexpress.com. Type in your Serial # and some other information and you will find out exactly what your engine is! I typed in your Serial # and found out it is a 2.0 L Mariner. This web site also gives you a complete parts listing and pricing for your engine.

My 1996 (mfg 11/95) Mariner 50 4 stroke is exactly the same as the 50 Merc. Both powerheads were made by Yamaha.

My local Merc dealer told me Merc is going to build all of their own 4 strokes starting in 03. So they will not be Yamahas powerheads anymore. He said this info came from his annual training seminar at Merc.

G,day, BillP. Yep, I think that you are right, however I think that you will find that Merc are now making powerheads for Yam 50 and 60 HP motors. Merc are running EFI on their m,otors but Yam are only using Carbys, Could be wrong, maybe someone else can confirm.

whaley...the merc factory reps told me that Yamaha/Merc powerheads were actually built at an independent "motor" house in Japan and sent to Yamaha for completion. I don't remember the name but evidently the place builds powerheads for other manufacturers too. Do you know if the new Mercs will be made in America or Japan?

bp

G'Day. I am 90% sure that the mid range Merc & Yam powerheads are built by Merc in USA. The 75, 90 and 115 HP powerheads are built by Yam in Japan. Merc and Yam use their own legs and lower units.
